Easy steps to conserve water

Water conservation has become important in all regions, even rainy one’s such as my home in Seattle. Water is not an unlimited resource and everyone uses a lot of water per day. There are a few really easy tricks that won’t be difficult to work into your daily life. By doing all of these you could save literally hundreds of gallons per week. This can decrease your utility bill and make you feel good for caring for the environment. Give them a shot.

  • If you use a low-flow shower head, you can save 15 gallons of water during a 10-minute shower
  • Every time you shave minutes off your use of hot water, you also save energy and keep dollars in your pocket
  • It takes about 70 gallons of water to fill a bathtub, so showers are generally the more water-efficient way to bathe.
  • Nearly 22% of indoor home water use comes from doing laundry. Save water by making sure to adjust the settings on your machine to the proper load size.
  • Energy Star dishwashers use about 4 gallons of water per load, and even standard machines use only about 6 gallons. Hand washing generally uses about 20 gallons of water each time.
  • Fix those leaky faucets. A small drip from a worn faucet washer can waste 20 gallons of water per day. Larger leaks can waste hundreds of gallons.
  • Turn off the water after you wet your toothbrush. There is no need to keep the water running while brushing your teeth. Just wet your brush and fill a glass for mouth rinsing.
  • Keep a jug of water in the fridge, that way you don’t have to run the tap for the water to get cold.
  • Collect the water when waiting for it to warm up before your shower then use it to water your plants.

Gluten Free Brownies

There are a couple people in my family that can’t have gluten which is just the worst. But I’ve been looking into it and realizing that it really isn’t that good for you. The holidays can be hard for my family members but I am going to make these gluten free brownies so everyone can enjoy them!

Gluten Free Brownies | Cooking Classy

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 12 oz semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 6 Tbsp unsalted butter, diced into 1 Tbsp pieces, plus more for baking dish
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a mixing bowl whisk together cornstarch, cocoa powder and salt, set aside. Add chocolate chips to a microwave safe bowl, top with butter and heat mixture in microwave on HIGH power in 20 second intervals, stirring after each interval until melted and smooth. Stir in sugar, then mix vanilla and eggs one at a time, mixing until combined after each addition. Add dry mixture and stir until well blended and smooth, then mix in pecans. Pour batter into a well buttered 8 by 8-inch baking dish (you can also line the baking dish with parchment if desired, then pour batter over parchment) and spread into an even layer. Bake in preheated oven until toothpick inserted into center comes out with a few moist crumbs attached, about 35 – 38 minutes. Allow to cool completely then cut into squares (I found mine cut cleaner after freezing for about 45 minutes – after cooling, if you can waiting any longer).

Watch these NOW.

A few movies and series have stuck with me over the years and many of them my friends haven’t seen. Some of these movies are really great that you might not have heard of. I think everyone should watch them.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

This movie is about a couple getting their minds erased. It stars Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet. It’s sad and very gripping for people who have had broken hearts. The movie is abstract and requires your full attention to truly be appreciated.

9/10 on my personal scale

Donnie Darko

This movie is a dark drama about a boy who starts to see things. It’s a series of events that all tie together. It’s kind of out there and a little disturbing but very interesting concepts.

7/10

Momento

Momento is a fantastic movie about a man with anterograde amnesia. (AKA the same disorder Dori from nemo has) He can’t put short term memories in to long term but this doesn’t stop him from a quest of trying to avenge his murdered wife. It is very artistic and really puts the viewer in the mind of someone with a memory disorder.

The Man From Earth

This is a trippy movie that is just about dialogue. I didn’t think I could ever sit through a movie of just boring talking but I loved it and would watch it again.  It’s about a professor who gathers his academic friends to reveal to them that he has been living since prehistoric times and does not age. Obviously his claim is met with skepticism which leads to very interesting conversation topics.

A Very Long Engagement

This is a French film that has some of the most fantastic use of imagery I have ever seen in a movie. It is about a woman’s quest to find out what happened to her lover during WW1 after he was sent to the front lines. It has mystery, drama, action and that “make-your-heart-ache” romance.

10/10

Amelie

This also stars the same actress Audrey Tautou and also in French. It is about a very shy girl who secretly dabbles in people’s lives. It’s very interesting and whenever I watch it I am reminded to appreciate little things. It’s a great movie.

9/10

The Fall

I love love love this movie. It’s based in the early 1900′s and is about a stuntman who is in the hospital after a stunt gone bad. He forms an unlikely friendship with a young girl. Together they tell a perhaps not so imaginary story. The imagery for this movie is amazing.

10/10

Garden State

This movie has sort of become a classic for my generation. I’ve never heard anyone say they don’t like it. It has an amazing sound track as well. Even though the characters are quite odd, the movie is very relateable.

8/10

Ponyo

I am not big on anime but my sister forced me to watch this and it’s one of my favorites. You could say it’s the Japanese version of The Little Mermaid but with children. It’s kind of odd but if you aren’t hung up that it’s a cartoon, you might like it.

8/10

Generation Kill

This is an HBO series that is fascinating. It is about the first Marine Recon troops entering Iraq. It based off of a true story written by a Rolling Stones journalist. It gives a real look on the first weeks in Iraq and how difficult adjusting to war can be for even some of the toughest soldiers.

9/10

Game of Thrones

Another series, that is simply amazing. It is described as fantasy for people who don’t like fantasy. It is simply amazing. If you haven’t watched it yet, get on it.

People are always asking me where I get my jewelry.

I get a lot of compliments on the jewelry I wear and I think that is because it’s usually not something you see everyday.

I order it off of the site Etsy.com

For example

This is a bracelet I ordered straight from China for $2.00. Shipping and handling knocked it up to only about $4.50.

vintage bronze antler necklace

Another one I ordered from the same maker. This one was only $1.99 without shipping.

The way to use Etsy is to search for things you like.

Use the categories to narrow your search.

After selecting an item, make sure to look at reviews for that seller.

If the reviews aren’t mostly good ones, probably stay away.

Many vendors offer deals if you order more than one product from them which is hard not to take advantage of.

The only thing to remember, when getting cheap things, they may not last long.

It’s good to go back and review your experience to the vendor.

If you had a bad experience, let the vendor know because they may fix it.

Halloween is coming up, it’s a great place to look for stuff for your costume!

This guy is having the worst date ever

Found these pictures and they kind of got me thinking how different dating is now with all the different technology and really just change of culture. Everything is completely different now. Not that I was dating in the 50’s and 60’s but if I time traveled I wouldn’t know where to start.

More like he won’t text you ever again.

How embarrassing would it be to have your stockings fall down on your date? Garters are key.

If a man today offered me a handkerchief, I’d assume he was way too old for me.

Thank goodness I saw this. I always sit in awkward positions on hot dates.

Now if only I could find a man that knew how to dance…

I am pretty sure I am still single because I always forget to iron my stockings.

If this happens to you, I have a feeling he’s really just not that into you.

These days, just hope he picks up the tab.

Very true. Unless your date is boring. And pouty.  Just completely ignore him then.

He must have been a really boring date.

All these tips aside, on dates it’s best to just be yourself.
